K9 4 KIDS – Frequently Asked Questions

Empowering Youth. Rescuing Big Dogs. Serving San Martin & the Bay Area.

Our Youth Programs

Who is eligible to participate in the youth training program? Our program is designed for youth ages 7 to 18. While many of our participants come through referrals from local youth programs and schools, we also welcome individual requests directly from parents or guardians who feel their child would benefit from the program.

Is there a cost for the youth program? No, there is no cost for youth to participate in our dog training and mentorship programs. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping the community. However, donations are always appreciated to help us cover insurance, equipment, and care for the dogs.

What will my child do in the program? Participants are paired with a rescue dog to learn responsibility, empathy, and patience. They work on obedience training, grooming, and socialization. This hands-on experience builds confidence and leadership skills while helping a rescue dog get ready for adoption.

How do I sign my child up? Please contact us directly at (408) 806-5277 or email robert@k94kids.org to discuss availability and the application process.

Adopting a Rescue Dog

What breeds of dogs do you have? We are a Big Dog Rescue. We specialize in rescuing and rehabilitating large breed canines (such as Shepherds, Huskies, Labs, and mixes) that are often harder to place in traditional shelters but make wonderful companions.

What is your adoption fee? We do not have an adoption fee. Our primary goal is to find the perfect loving home for our dogs. While adoption is free, we gladly accept donations to help the next dog in line.

Do I have to live in San Martin to adopt? No! We do not have geographic restrictions. Whether you live in the Bay Area or out of state, if you are the right match for the dog, you can adopt from us.

Do you offer a trial period? Yes. We want to ensure a perfect fit for both your family and the dog. We support trial fostering (foster-to-adopt) to see how the dog adjusts to your home environment before finalizing the adoption. If it doesn't work out, we will always take the dog back.

Public Services: Boarding & Grooming

Can I board my own dog at your facility? Yes! We offer Kenneling (Boarding) and Grooming services to the general public. Your dog will receive professional care in a safe, compassionate environment.

Where does the money for these services go? 100% of the proceeds from our boarding and grooming services go directly to supporting the K9 4 KIDS nonprofit mission.

Are these services tax-deductible? Yes! Because these charges support our 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the fees you pay for grooming and kenneling are 100% tax-deductible. You get great care for your pet while writing it off as a charitable contribution—a win-win!

Volunteering & Donations

How old do I have to be to volunteer? We accept volunteers aged 15 and older.

How can I volunteer? Fill out our volunteer request form HERE and we will get back with you promptly

What do volunteers do? We have many needs at our San Martin facility! Volunteers assist with:

  • Socializing and walking the dogs.

  • Maintenance of the grounds and training areas.

  • Assisting during youth program hours.

  • Helping with fundraising events.

How can I donate? You can donate directly through our website via the "Donate Now" button. We accept one-time donations, monthly sponsorships, and contributions of supplies. Since we are a 501(c)(3) organization, your financial donations are tax-deductible.
